Steeple in Harper's Ferry

From the hill looking south downriver the steeple of St. Peter's Catholic Church pokes up through the trees in Harper's Ferry, WV.

These ruins are of another church.

Our top down tour with the park ranger took us right passed the church and into the lower town.

This church is across the street from where I live.

As the sign says its in a building that was once a carriage house.  It was built in 1811 according to the history here.

It is very popular for weddings.

Fredericksburg Steeples

Most of the churches in the historic part of Fredericksburg, VA are gathered on one street in town.

We walked passed most of these on our way to a restaurant on Mother's Day.

I think the one top and below had the same architect.

This one we saw coming from our BnB.  Not sure what happened to the rest of the building.  I guess we'd know if we'd stop to read the historical marker.

I only captured half of the front, but it was symmetrical so you can imagine what it looked like.

Downtown DC Churches

Been awhile since I've joined Inspired Sunday.  I was sorting through photos and came across these from Washington, DC.

These first two were taken from the car more than a year ago.  They may not be churches though the spires made me think they were.

These photos were taken this year on a very cloudy day.

The red spire is so interesting.  How do they keep the birds away?

New Orleans Cathedral

St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans in the oldest cathedral in the US.  The parish was founded in 1720.

The inside is not as spectacular as European cathedrals but then again it's much younger.  Maybe by the time it reaches the age of those it too will be covered in gold.

It was a quiet refuge from the hub hub of the French Quarter.

But here's a strange juxtaposition - right outside the doors of the cathedral are palm and tarot card readers.

Two Local Churches

At first I thought this was a church converted to a house until I saw the sign.

This church was up on a hill and both access points had chains across.  Not very inviting despite their handicapped accessible sign.  I didn't think I should get any closer.

There are a few old quarries nearby so I'm sure its built of local stone.

It was a week day and I at least expected a church office to be open but then maybe the church is too small.

Happy Easter!

Sorry for the quality of these.  I used my phone and its not an iPhone while I sat in the pew awaiting the start of the chorus concert.  My husband is a bass in the chorus that performed several Sundays ago at this Lutheran Church decked out for Lent.

Frederick, MD Church

Friday I took a break from getting this house ready for selling and went to Frederick, MD.  I have had a box of old coins that I figured we didn't need to have in the safe deposit box anymore.  A couple of years ago I took them out expecting to find out what they were worth. Well the box sat in a closet until recently along with some old jewelry. After selling the jewelry to a local jewelry store most for the melt value, the jeweler said they also buy coins but sell them to a coin store in Frederick.  I figured I would cut out the middle and go directly there.

It was a beautiful day to be out and I was sorry I didn't bring my camera.  I used my phone to take these two photos of a church I walked past.  It was the white walls against the blue sky that caught my eye.

Lebanon, NH Church

In February when I was visiting family in NH for granddaughter's 2nd birthday, I went to church with them in Hanover.  Their church meets in the high school.  To get there we drove through Lebanon passing this church with its red door and greenish siding.  It sits next to a school and the swings are there to the left.  Not sure what the bell is doing out of a steeple.

Spires from the Train Window

I took the Vermonter train from Baltimore to Windsor, Vermont to visit my granddaughter for her 2nd birthday.  Lots of interesting sights from the train.  Graffiti is very evident on any vertical surface and its amazing how much junk is piled near train tracks in metropolitan areas.  

I looked for churches to capture as we quickly sped by.  I was not always successful.  It was raining on the trip north and snowing in spots on the trip home.

The train goes through 8 states: Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont.  I couldn't tell you where these churches were along the route other than they were not in Vermont.
