Scotland - A Sunday Walk

The second Sunday we were in Scotland we took a walk from Dunblane to Bridge of Allan, the next town to the south.  We followed the Darn Road or Darn Walk which is purported to be an old Roman road.

The walk skirts a golf course as it leaves Dunblane then keeps pretty straight along different sorts of fences and walls.  It got quite muddy.

We came upon this exceptional tree.  I had Dan stand there for perspective.

Allan Water was to our right the whole way.

We came upon this sign and cave.

As we approached Bridge of Allan this horse and a pony checked us out.

Though the day dawned with bright sun, after our late morning breakfast the sky had clouded and rain threatened so we took the train back to Dunblane.

Memphis Fences

Went back into the files to find some fences to share on Fences hosted by Gosia.

These photos date to last January when we visited memphis, TN.

First a fence around playground equipment at Graceland.

Also at Graceland the fence around the field where Elvis had horses.

Here is the family graveyard at Graceland, notice the fence in the foreground and around the fountain in the center.

Here's view of the Mississippi from the top of the Pyramid with a fence to keep you safe.

At in the historic district there's a iron fence separating neighboring properties.

Harper's Ferry Fences

Monday, Dan and I took a short trip to Harper's Ferry, WV known for that famous raid on the US Arsenal by John Brown in an attempt to start a slave revolt and end slavery.  It didn't go well.  We learned that Harper's Ferry is also historic because of associations with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, the Lewis & Clark Expedition, and the Niagara Movement & WEB DuBois.

to share these fences in Harper's Ferry.

Two rivers meet in Harper's Ferry.  Here's the bridge over the Potomac.

Here's the Shenandoah that empties into the Potomac.

We took a tour with a National Park Service ranger and visited the Harper's Ferry cemetery.

Here's the grave of a Revolutionary War veteran.

Many of the historical buildings are filled with exhibits.

The C & O Canal along the Potomac and the B & O Railroad had a race west.  Though the canal got to Harper's Ferry first the railroad won the race west.

Here's the bridge over the Potomac, muddy from heavy rains over the weekend. The Appalachian Trail crosses here and Harper's Ferry is about the midpoint of that Maine to Georgia trek.

No bridge seems to be without locks of love these days.

Fencing - Use What You Have

I was cleaning out photos from iPhoto yesterday and came across these fence shots.  I've never posted to Fences Around the World but here goes.

These fences were at the Benjamin Banneker Museum.  Made of tree limbs, I think they look beautiful.

View from Here - Spring Temps

Today is supposed to be the warmest day we have had in ages: 75º.

Trouble is it's also raining.

So during the first rain shower I vacuumed the screen porch and swept the deck.

Then when the rain stopped did some pruning before the rain drove me inside again.

Now I've had my lunch and am waiting for the rain to stop again.

Well, it did back out to work some more on spring chores.

Here's the view from here:

The pond through the screen of the porch with ice.

A bright spot below my bedroom window - can't see them?

Here they are.

My makeshift fence of downed wood. Would you believe I could find nothing on the internet about how to make this?

Closer look.  I hope it will make the deer think twice about jumping it.

I have two helpers coming Saturday to extend it along this edge of the glen. I think they will be able to start with larger logs and build it up from there.  We'll use the trees as stakes to keep them from rolling down into the glen.

Screen porch almost inviting though too soon for cushions.

And too soon for collectibles on display.

But it won't be long now before I'm out there with a glass of iced tea and a good book but first the garden chores need to be done.
