Minimal Harvest

I haven't posted on the harvest because there have been none.  But Sunday I picked these two kinds of green leaf lettuces for salad for dinner.  There's not much else out there because the spinach which is usually a prolific fall crop has done nothing.  There are some small bok choy plants that may be usable once they get bigger if they can do that with the light failing and temps falling.

Harvest Monday - October Surprise

I really didn't expect to be writing a Harvest post today.  Among my garden tasks for the day was to plant garlic.  Afterward I decided that with the cool nights, lack of direct sun and eventual frost, it was time to take down the green peppers and chop them for composting.  As I did this I discovered that there were quite a few green peppers both New Ace and Cubanelle on the plants. And I was pleasantly surprised by how blemish-free they are. Now these are not huge but they are usable.  So I'm open to suggestions as to how to use all these.  Recipe ideas?

Harvest Such As It Is!

Yikes - Another Harvest Monday - and Not Much to Show!

Production in the garden has slowed immensely. The sun is moving south which means the tall tulip poplar trees are shading the garden during mid day. The garden gets the first morning sun then later afternoon sun but decreasing sun is taking its toll.

Here's what I found in the garden when we returned from our vacation in Maine. I guess my teen aged watering team didn't pick anything the week before. Or maybe they did and left me the sorrier looking tomatoes.


On Tuesday I picked green beans and used all my tomatoes to make a sauce for dinner.


That's it! I know there will be more beans out there and there are peppers to be picked. I have a late butternut squash that I hope will grow to maturity. But the tomatoes need to be pulled for they are done for the season.

Harvest Monday

It's the week of the peppers. Tomato harvest has slowed way down. there are more blooms on the Goldie so I'm hopeful for some more into September but as the sun moves farther south my vegetable garden is shaded more and more each day.

Cucumbers are still producing. They love the fence location this year.

Harvest Monday

How soon we forget. I went back to last year's postings for August and read my laments that the zucchini wasn't producing and there were no green peppers. I was celebrating tomatoes and eggplants, however. This year the zucchini are just about done for the season, the peppers are mass producing, the tomatoes are satisfactory and no eggplant. What a difference from one year to the next.




Most of my tomatoes have been frozen, eaten or the last batch made into tomato jam. We are eating peppers but I could freeze some too. The basil you see above was washed, dried, chopped and drizzled with olive oil then frozen in a bag flattened so I can break off bits to use in the winter.

Harvest Monday

I'm late with my Harvest Monday post hosted by Daphne's Dandelions. It was a week of cucumbers, zucchini, peppers and tomatoes.

These three eggplants were picked because the bunny had snipped all the leaves of the plants. It really was too early to pick them. They didn't taste very good.



I didn't get out to pick on Sunday or today so I know I'll have a monster of a zucchini awaiting me.

Harvest Monday

This has been the best week for harvesting in the vegetable garden. Lots of variety!
Lots of peppers that made wonderful stuffed peppers this week. There are more peppers on there but I pick as needed if I can.

Amish paste have slowly ripened.

Zucchini is at the giveaway stage. I have given some away twice now and even tried freezing it for soups this winter. We have it almost at every meal in some form.

Cucumbers have filled up my refrigerator pickle jar. I found another smaller jar to use at Goodwill and that's full too.

This Amish paste looked lovely on one side but was eaten on the other. I cut off the bad part and the rest was fine.

More peppers for salads and other uses.

Cherry tomatoes are ready every day. They are best in salads or to eat by themselves.

Harvest Monday

Long green things and round red things have had the stage for this past week's harvests. Yep, the zucchini and cucumbers are making their presence known as are some peppers and now the tomatoes are debuting, too. There was an Amish paste out there on Sunday with a nice reddish glow to it but it's still an understudy and will have to wait to debut next week.

Harvest Monday - July 4th

I started the Harvest Week last Monday picking this green pepper which didn't have much that was eatable.

The next day I picked two Cubanelle and two green peppers, green beans, zucchini and some basil.
Thursday I picked these zucchini that went into a shrimp stir fry.

The garlic was harvested last week and is drying in the garage.

More cherry tomatoes which are very sweet.

The single zucchini went into a salad and I steamed the green beans. The bunny is enjoying them too. The onions were part of my onion harvest. Now I know how you get pearl onions! That's the size these were so I added them to frozen green peas.

Sunday I braided the onions after they had hung to dry on the fence for two days and then got rained on early Sunday morning. I have to rethink how I grow onions. They are not very large.


These are the bullnecked ones which I'll have to use first.

This morning I got two more cherry toms and two cucumbers for the 4th of July dinner tonight.
