Visitor

One morning last week I took tea and scone to the balcony.  While I was there a visitor stopped by.  Now this isn't so easy living on the 11th floor unless they came up the elevator and walked down the hall.  This visitor used its wings to visit.  I didn't have the camera with me that day but the next day the visitor came again while Dan and I had breakfast out there.  I was able to get the camera to record this momentous visit.

It helped that I fed the crow the first time and that we put something on the rail this time, too.

Dan calls the above balcony our front yard.

Our backyard is off the 2nd bedroom that we use as Dan's study.  And guess what the visitor stopped there too.

But not for long.

We haven't had it visit since last week when we had the lovely weather.

This week has been oppressively hot and humid.

Heron Rookery

Last Saturday was a warm day so we headed out for a walk to find the great blue heron rookery.  We see herons fly by our 11th story windows almost daily as they fly to and from the lakes near us but didn't realize that the rookery was an easy walk.

We crossed a creek - on a bridge built for the construction of a pipeline.

Walked along the pipeline easement with the forest floor green with growth.

Marveled at the large sycamore.

And noticed the first spring flowers.

The rookery appeared in the trees above us as dark patches.

The nests are just sticks that are reused year after year.

I didn't count all the birds but they stood like sentinels up there.

I have no idea if they are the adult parents or the offspring.

I need to read up on how they incubate their eggs because none appeared to be sitting on the nests.

Bird Watching Continues

I can't help but watch the birds.  They have always intrigued me.

My earliest memory of birdwatching is in grade school.  My brother and I would watch out a window as we had breakfast.  We kept track of the ones we saw and my love of birdwatching had its start.  I don't keep a list as I did back then but if I see an unusual one I look it up.

The cardinals are paired up around here now.  I captured this pair out the window enjoying the buffet of tulip poplar seeds.
