My trip last week to Brookside Gardens included a visit to the Butterfly Conservatory.
Here's our bus off loading.
Our first garden sighting.
Then on to the butterflies.
Immediately upon entering one landed on my sleeve.
Scattered throughout were these trays of rotting bananas.
The two butterflies above had interesting "eyes" on their wings - a deterrent for predators. Inside the wings were blue. I chased these around to try to get the inside shot. Then gave up for a time and enjoyed the other varieties.
Friend Sue had one land on her hat.
Back to chasing the elusive butterfly that wouldn't show the inside of its wings. Below you get a hint of the blue.
But I was patient and it opened to show me.
Worth the wait.
Such fascinating delicate creatures.

Looks like a fun trip. I learned something new about soem butterflies preferring fruit, such as bananas. :-)
What a lovely place! Who knew butterflies like rotting fruit?!?!? You can bet I will be placing an old banana on my patio table hoping for visitors!!! Thanks!
...you sure found some beauties, I'm still looking.
What a wonderful excursion.
Worth a Thousand Words
I've been to a butterfly conservatory once and saw some of the same species as you. It was a good experience, and it is good to be reminded.
How beautiful, Marcia. You've inspired me to go in to our butterfly house at the museum, I haven't been for several years.

Hi I'm a new follower of your blog.. wonderful photos of beautiful butterflies. That blue one was definitely worth the wait.
Ooooh, i love that blue one! You were lucky to see so many different kinds and colors. I wonder if we put out our banana skins if we could lure some to our yard???
I've been to several of these and it's so much fun to watch the fragile beauties fluttering about. I love seeing your photos. Your patience was definitely rewarded.
Great set of pictures - we have a butterfly house at the zoo here - but its so warm inside that your camera often 'fogs up' when you go inside!

It even works in our backyard. Overripe bananas are a bit of a magnet for butterflies and even the odd bird takes a nibble.
