The Project One Week Later

If you are a regular reader you know that last week I tackled painting and organizing the space we refer to the pantry/mudroom/laundry.

Good news!  The pantry is organized in much better condition than before.

Work continues of the other parts.

Though this photo doesn't show it, the area under the cabinets was painted yesterday afternoon.  Excuse the mess on the counter and appliances.  It's one of the painting staging areas.

Today I hope to get up the stairs and start preparing that loft to be painted.  The stairs will be the last item on the list, hopefully before the weekend is over.  Notice the door color?

I did get the first coat on there.  I had to purchase another paint, same color that would go on metal.

I did hang some things over the roll top desk.  In looking at this I think I need to lower the two items in the middle.  My mother painted the three items on the outside and I made the scherenschnitte in the middle.  It says:

A house is built of walls and beams,
A home is made of love and dreams.

I know its a funny place for a roll top desk.  This was my working desk in our old house where I graded many papers. I have a built in desk now in my study but I hated to give this up when we moved here. It serves as our mail gathering point plus the file drawer has all the information about all our various equipment in the house.  Its rarely closed as shown here.

Tuesday's Treasures #1

This is a school photograph from my mother's childhood.
I keep it on a shelf in my study.

My mother is the girl with a checked dress in the center above.  She has a locket hanging from a chain.  I wonder what happened to that.

Mom was born in December 1918 so in March 1927 when this photo was taken she would have been 8 years old.

It was a one room school house there in Bausman Township outside of Lancaster, PA.  Mom ended up skipping a grade or two because there was only the one big class with one teacher.

This is a photo I will treasure and pass on.

Unrelated Photos

Connecting to Through My Lens
with this wide assortment of unrelated photos.
Which one do you like best?

I liked the repetition of the pavement's dotted line in the tanker cars. They extended as far as the eye could see.
(Captured through the car window.)

Rare to see one of these barn signs and in such good condition.  Maybe its younger than I thought.
Seen in Pennsylvania.

This door could be anywhere but it was in Wellsboro, PA.
Stately don't you think despite its worn appearance?

Neptune's silhouette along the boardwalk in Virginia Beach, VA.  We were surprised to see it there.

Project Progress Report

So the painting portion of this project started on Saturday.  This is one big room but divided into three spaces.

Looking into the pantry you can see the shelf supports minus the shelves.  Since these are tethered to the wall for safety I painted through them.

The small refrigerator you see there is technically part of the mudroom portion.  The lighting plays tricks with the color.  It is a pale purple not blue.

Painting of the laundry room has not been started at this point of the photo but you can see some of the stuff that has migrated to the front hall.

Here's the mudroom.  The bench with the shoe cubbies is covered to protect the wood.  Should have done that with the stairs behind there to the loft because Dan spilled paint there reaching to the ceiling.

He worked all afternoon to paint the ceiling.  An incredible task because of the  duct work and the heights.  Here he is Sunday morning touching up spots so he could put the ladder away for good.

Pantry all done and awaiting shelves.

I still have to paint behind the stairs and then up in the loft.

Over the laundry sink we put up a plexiglass backsplash.  The hardware store cut one to size for us.  Easy enough to put up with screws in each corner.  Now cleanup in that sink doesn't splash the paint.  Why didn't we do that 10 years ago?

More photos of Dan on the ladder.  I had to use a flashlight to spotlight spots for him to touch up.

The color is a nice improvement to the space.

I couldn't have tackled this project without Dan's immeasurable help.

I'm taking Sunday off and will take up this next phase Monday.  Stay tuned.
