Hope Cemetery

Barre, Vermont is known for its granite quarries and the sculptors from all over the world that have made the town home.

The local cemetery is a testament to their skill. We spent quite a few minutes walking around admiring the headstones which are unlike anything we have seen before in cemeteries.

By the way Barre is pronounced barry not bar as I thought.

Someday we will return and make a visit to the granite quarry museum there.

Fall Colors

Dan and I took this walk on Tuesday the 11th.  The leaves were in their glory.  Dan calls it "eye candy" to see the reds and yellows so vibrant. As I write this on Friday we have had 3 inches of rain overnight and the leaves are coming down fast. The peak color is over.

But enjoy this walk, we did. It was on Skyline Drive. Not the Skyline Drive in Virginia in the Shenandoah National Park.

See the stone wall?  It's a cellar hole.  There were several of them together either from a house or barn that once stood here.

This granite post was taller than me.  I was tempted to take the ring for garden art but didn't.

We walked over 2 miles in and out. It's a road on the map but one that's closed during mud season and definitely only traveled on by 4 wheel drive.  There were signs for and against ATV travel. It must be a popular snowmobile path too.

Wednesday Walk

The walking group went a bit farther afield on the 5th last week. We drove south to walk around Kezar Lake in Sutton, NH.  It was a very gray day though the rain held off for us. The walk was mostly level and took us almost 3 miles and an hour and a quarter to walk.

This is definitely a summer spot.  Lots of big vacation homes.

And an inn.

The six who took the walk went on from here to New London to lunch but first choice was closed, and second choice had too long a line. Three of us who had carpooled found another spot that was not crowded and enjoyed ourselves.  From there we went to see a bog and were glad we did.

The ground cover was brilliant and we did spot cranberries.

And these were a surprise: pitcher plants.

It was a grand day.

Today I'm in charge of choosing the walk.  More on that another time.
