Vegetable Garden at the Start of Summer

Spent the morning in the vegetable garden today.  Here's from the gate looking in.

This first bed has 4 tomato plants that I purchased and a row of radishes.

This larger bed has carrots, beans and peppers. The three peppers in the front are ones I started.  There were two in each of those cups so I transplanted one from each to the back side of the bed. Can you see the squash on the far left.  It's a volunteer that I hope is butternut so I'm going to let it grow.

These banana peppers are almost ready for picking.  They are on a plant I purchased.

The jalapeƱo also has small peppers on it that I can pick any day I need them.

The tomato in the middle is a Rutgers and gave me my first tomato.  The four in each corner are ones I started.

Under the netting is broccoli from which I got a nice head today.  I also have zucchini starts in there.

I took all the garlic scapes off before vacation and we had them in spring rolls.  Won't be long before the garlic needs to be harvested.

Here's another bed of tomatoes.  The two on the left were purchased plants and the others are my starts.

Cucumbers are up and more lettuce in front.

I took a lot of basil from this bed today.

These are butternut squash that my Mom started before she moved to assisted living.  I hope they produce.

And here's the first tomato.  Not very big. I put it into the zucchini and it dissolved.

Harvest on Return from Vacation

Back from a relaxing week in Thousand Island Park, NY.
In the garden lovely heads of broccoli awaited me and so did the remaining stand of snow peas. I pulled one carrot too to see what it looked like.  All went into a stir fry with thinly sliced pork last night.

Other harvesters at Daphnes Dandelions.

Oh, Deer!

We are just back from a wonderful week in the Thousand Islands having rented a cottage in Thousand Islands Park, NY on the St. Lawrence River.  A lovely spot to visit and enjoy nature.  Future post coming on that subject.

I had someone watering for me the week I was gone and though I did treat everything with Liquid Fence the week before departure, obviously having no one at home meant the critters moved in.  I think most of this is deer damage but the ground hog may be culpable as well.

Every pink geranium blossom is gone.  Here's the before.

Orange day lilies were in the blooming stage but mostly I have stalks now.  And these had been sprayed!

Phlox is nibbled but it will send up new flower buds.

These lilies won't recover this season.

I only have this low one they missed.

This I can't figure.  They ate the leaves of the bleeding heart.  Never have they done this before.

I was so hoping to finally see blossoms on this liatris but not this year.

The hibiscus was just cut right off.  That one's a mystery too because typically not touched by the deer.

The Easter lily had some nibbles but it will bloom.

More day lily bare stalks.

Stella d'oro is never eaten.  Not this time.  Here in the perennial garden and in the pond garden something decided to munch.

And did they really nibble on this too?

I expected the blossoms of the hostas to disappear and some did.  Others didn't.

This is a hibiscus I brought home from my Mom's cottage when we moved her out.  They have been munching on it.

Pink Yarrow - nibbled.

And finally evidence of the other culprit.  A newly dug hole under the deck.  New tactics  are in order to address this scoundrel.

Must break out more Liquid Fence this week and make lots of noise to let them know we are home to stay and please stick to the woods.
