Concerns

Granddaughter #1 had a major eye injury two weeks ago.  She was home from school because of Covid and preparing to do some weaving.  She was carrying a scissors when she tripped over one of her stuffies and poked her left eye. A trip to the ER revealed that she had lacerated her cornea.  A multiple hour emergency surgery that afternoon at Dartmouth Hospital repaired the laceration however she could only see light from that eye.

Multiple visits with doctors, specialists and a second opinion with a children's ophthalmologist at Children's Hospital in Boston have happened in the last two weeks. A decision was made to have the surgery needed to replace the lens (like cataract surgery) here locally at Dartmouth and a date was set, October 21st. That was Friday the 11th.

Over the weekend doubts and gut feelings about whether that was the right decision set in for her parents. Two factors led them to change their minds: a call from the pediatrician who recommended Boston Childrens and a chance meeting with a resident in the Ophthalmology department at Dartmouth who also said Boston Childrens.

On Monday the change in decision was made and yesterday they got word that they would be fit into the surgery schedule of the surgeon they saw at Childrens.  The call said report at 2 pm.   Luckily Emily had already packed for any eventuality.  We got granddaughter #2's belongings and instructions and the dog and off they set to Boston, a 2.5 hour trek.

Surgery did not happen until late in the evening last night!  A three hour ordeal. We got final word she was in post op care at 11:30 pm.

She's awake this morning at the hotel they booked and will see the doctor at 10 am when the patch comes off and hopefully the new lens they installed will restore her vision.

We learned of this accident while we were traveling to Chicago.  It definitely dampered our enthusiasm to be visiting family and friends.  Granddaughter's injury weighed heavily on us knowing all we could do was pray.  Since being home we have done what we could to help but worry and concerns are still there.

I don't usually write about concerns and such but needed to share and hope ask for prayers for granddaughter's recovery.

Your granddaughter is in my prayers and I'm sending the whole family a cloud of virtual supportive hugs from this old granny. Just feel how positive my thoughts are that all will be well.
