Wednesday's excursion from Vantage House to the Smithsonian American Art Museum was wonderful. The docent who met us at the door before the museum even opened was incredibly knowledgeable.
The first half hour was devoted to art created during the Depression and funded by the government to put artists back to work. Thousands of works of art were completed and hung and placed in government buildings all over the country. The artists were told to depict American life. And they did.
Do you know what this is?
The building of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
I zoomed in on some of the detail.
Below is Central Park in winter.
This was an iconic scene of small town America - the baseball game.
This one was interesting for all the detail in the room.
The second half of our visit was devoted to modern American art.
This painting was created by a light artist. As the light changed the painting changed. I couldn't capture all the iterations.
This one looks like drift wood and originally it was. Then it was cast in bronze.
These pieces were exhibited in the Lincoln Gallery.
I couldn't capture this neon map in one take.
We had a small glimpse of all that was there. I know we will return.

it is a place which I am going to visit one day..
We can learn so much about social history from paintings as your photos show. So wonderful that you have these trips. A great way to get to know all your neighbours.
Wonderful paintings. I especially enjoyed the older ones.
