More Bullies in the Garden

We both had heard the thump last night but didn't think to investigate.  Oh now I wish we had.

Here's the before:

Here's the after:

This one was just recuperating from June's attack by deer, I thought at the time.  I've given up on anything growing in here this year.

These weren't tipped over or drastically dug up.

This one just needed righting.

The pot is replanted but I don't know if any of the plants will survive.

Those darn bullies.  Not much I can do to keep the raccoons away.

The Stars Are Here! The Stars Are Here!

The stargazer lilies that is!  They are the pink and white ones.  The white ones opened too but I don't know their name.

Here's what they looked like earlier this week.

And now!

And more are yet to open.

Now there are other blooms in the garden.  Coleus and New Guinea impatiens are loving the wet weather.

Shasta daisies going strong.

Newly opened day lilies but ...

as of today they are gone.  Not from blooms being done but deer having dessert.  It has not been my year for day lilies.

Purple cone flowers in full array.

Black eyed susans blooming, too.

But the rain has taken a toil on the creeping thyme.

This is what it should look like but there are sections looking like above all through the paths of the perennial garden.

Another day lily just a distant memory now.

The geraniums have recovered yet again from being on the meal plan.

And last but not least the liatris is blooming for the first time ever.

Enjoying Beans

The green beans are producing. They are the bush variety and loaded.  I picked only what we could eat Thursday evening but will have to get out there to pick more or they'll get too fat.  I also picked basil and there was one Rutgers tomato.  More hornworms discovered too but they didn't go in this basket!

My Mom visited overnight and she helped clean the beans.  She's a lovely 94 year old!

Small Harvests

I have been getting small amounts of things from the vegetable garden including two patio tomatoes tonight.  Mostly I harvest as I need an item. Like these peppers and jalapeno that went into a corn chowder using leftover grilled corn from the 4th picnic.  Or lettuce as I needed some for oriental soup as I did one evening last week.

I'm not able to get to the garden in the sun because I got stung by a wasp on Friday which became infected as cellulitis and the antibiotic warns one against sun exposure.  So I went out this evening and picked the two tomatoes, discovered beans need picking soon and found evidence of tomato hornworms on the peppers and tomatoes.  I found two of them and drowned them in soapy water but couldn't find the others.  Do birds eat these pests anyone know?

There's one other thing that's hampering my gardening and its a bandage on my right pinky.  I sliced off the side tip of that finger last night using the mandolin on zucchini.  Ouch to put it lightly! I think that labor saving device is going to disappear from my kitchen unless I can find a safety version of it.  I have the bandage on until Friday and it can't get wet either.  Showers will be fun. Not!
