Finally!

I know these lilies have bloomed at least once before but I can find no photos of them.  They are a favorite snack of the deer when they first grow so any chance of having blooms is lost when the deer take a good munch on them.  This year I've been religious about spraying Liquid Fence in the areas where there is no other protection from the deer.  It has paid off because finally I have tiger lily blooms.  These are very different from the other lilies I have because they hang their bloom heads down.  They are lovely, don't you think?

I'm surprised by how the petals curl up and back.

Caught sight of this frog in the pond watching me from a water lily.  After I took its picture he croaked loudly and jump across the lily pads.

Harvest Monday: 20 July

Lots of parsley and its lovely.  I used a big bunch in a chicken pot pie and another time in a mushroom side dish I like to make.

Bush beans just starting.  I scared a rabbit out of the garden on Sunday and I know its going for the beans.  Thankfully they are not new shoots so I'll let the rabbit nibble for now.

Blossom end rot got the Goldie tomato and I'm having some blight problems so had to pick some green tomatoes.

Two more Juliette tomatoes and these lovely mild jalapeños.  I slit off the tops and stuffed with pepper jack cheese and tried to grill them.  I forgot to put them on foil so when the cheese started oozing out I transferred them to a pan on the stove top.  Though they still were a bit crisp, it was a nice combination with the soft melted cheese.

1806 Log Church

Located in PA west of Bedford not far from the turnpike.

We stopped here on our way to Pittsburgh in 2013.

The logs of the church were huge.

The graveyard was interesting.

The gravestones carved from locally quarried sandstone have weathered remarkably well.

Ferns - Just Love Them

One thing I've read about deer and keeping them out of the yard is to use ferns amongst the favorite deer plants like hosta.  Deer don't like ferns.  I had planted lots of ferns in my Glen Garden over the years, but now am encouraging the ones I have and adding to them.

I'm not good with names of ferns.  These were transplanted from my woods.

I know this one as a Boston fern and its not winter hardy except in my vestibule.  I've had it for several years and its very pot bound.  It's sitting on an old chair under the tree and despite my forgetting to water it, has done well there.

I believe this is called a cinnamon fern because of the leaf color when it first comes out.

I do know these as Japanese painted ferns.  There are three there that started very small and now have filled out well.

I've let this fern take over too much in this perennial bed.
