St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans in the oldest cathedral in the US. The parish was founded in 1720.
The inside is not as spectacular as European cathedrals but then again it's much younger. Maybe by the time it reaches the age of those it too will be covered in gold.
It was a quiet refuge from the hub hub of the French Quarter.
But here's a strange juxtaposition - right outside the doors of the cathedral are palm and tarot card readers.

Worth a Thousand Words
Sounds like that you all didn't care for New Orleans much... I lived there for about 4 years in the 80's ---and loved learning and being a part of the history in that area. We lived down St. Charles Ave --and didn't spend much time in the 'touristy' French Quarter... BUT---when we had company we always would take them to visit that area. I love hearing the local music when we are in the Quarter... I also love visiting the cathedral. There is some awesome EATING there ---but you have to do your research to find the good places which the 'locals' love...
Tourist areas always seem to turn me off (including what has happened in the Sevierville and Pigeon Forge areas of the Smokies)... We love Gatlinburg --but mostly we just love hiking an roaming around in the mountains...
