Also on the Acropolis

The Erechtheion finished in 395 BC.  It's off to the side of the Parthenon and houses shrines to Athena and Poseidon in the same buildings.
Below is the Caryatid Porch with six statues of maidens.  One of the originals was looted and the others are in the Acropolis Museum for safe keeping.  What you see there are replicas.

Here's the museum which tells the story of the Acropolis.  In building it ruins were uncovered and studied.  The museum resides over top so as you walk outside you can look down on the ruins.

Another amphitheater on the slopes of the Acropolis.

Here are originals of 5 of the six maidens.

One of these is a replica of the one looted.  I can't remember which one.

Here is a replica of the frieze from the Parthenon.

There is a story there of Greek might and accomplishments.

Everywhere you look on the Acropolis are piles of stones.  Some are labeled but most are not.  It's like a gigantic puzzle that someone is trying to put back together but will never finish.

You are definitely in a time warp visiting this place which has existed here for 25 centuries.

It was quite a highlight of our trip but there were even more stunning ruins to see after we left Athens.

  1. So glad there are some originals in the Greek Museum, rather than carted off to Great Britain.

  3. You might find Rodin's take on a caryatid interesting. https://www.musee-rodin.fr/en/musee/collections/oeuvres/fallen-caryatid-carrying-her-stone-large-model#group_1574-2

  4. Glad they have moved the caryatids to the museum to preserve them. The replicas still give you an impression of what they looked like in situ.

  5. These ruins are amazing even now but to have seen the structure intact must have been even more so.
