Feeding the Squirrels

Many people don't like squirrels, but I'm not one of those.  I know they raid bird feeders, but over  the years I've managed to get the kind of feeders they can't get into so all they feed on is the dropping of sunflowers underneath.  And they haven't been a problem for me in the garden either.  I have other critters that do the digging in the beds and pots.

I do feed the squirrels bread crusts and other starch leftovers.  They have come to expect it and sometimes will come to the back door on the deck to peer in to see where I am.  Now unlike suburban and city squirrels they don't come close to me.  Once I open the door they scamper away.  As soon as I'm back inside they will investigate what I have thrown out for them.

Yesterday it was a single pancake.  Somehow the pancake got divided and two squirrels had a meal.

  3. They used to bug me when they'd raid the feeder, but now it's on a thing wire from a branch and they can't get it.

    Lovely pics!

  4. It's so nice when "everyone" can live happily together...they aren't making a nuisance of themselves, and are richly rewarded. They are so cute!

  5. So many of my Blog Friends do love the squirrels and chipmunks--but NOT ME. Both critters (as cute as they are) do SO much damage in our yard... It's NOT fun --to find a bulb dug up... Oh Well---each to his own. I do still LOVE the DEER through --even though they try to eat our roses/flowers sometimes...

Getting ready for another cold blast on Thursday!!!! Looks like winter is coming for sure... VERY busy in the yard!
    Hugs,

  6. Grey Squirrels are not popular in the UK (where I am originally from) as they as an introduced species - but I still enjoyed showing them to my kids this (northern) summer when they were in the UK for the first time.
