Harvest Monday and Other Stuff

I actually had a harvest on Sunday evening: spinach from last Fall's sowing.  There were just enough leaves to add to a stir fry at the very end so they just started to wilt.  What rich flavor they had.  I wish there had been more.

You can see other harvests at our host: Daphne's Dandelions.

In other stuff here's a look at how the seedlings are doing.  I've now only had no shows in two pots of Delicious tomatoes.  I may try to put some more seeds in there or just try some marigolds which I know will germinate.  I planted three or four seeds in each pot and now face the daunting task of deciding which one plant to keep in each pot.  You can see below that of the three, no four New Ace peppers there is not much difference so how to choose?

I'll have to decide fairly soon which of these Amish paste is the one as they get their second set of leaves.   Decisions, decisions!

And finally also under the category of other stuff, here are the daffodils outside the bedroom wing windows ...

... and the hanging pot of pansies using the cinchers I got at the Flower Show ...
... and an interesting pattern on the window of my study in the morning light.  The drips are left over from when I had the humidifier in here when I had a cold but the other mark is left by can you guess?
Yes, a bird making contact with the window.  A hazard unintended by having large clear windows in a woodland setting despite my attempts at putting decals up to warn them.  No dead bird was found on the ground so I think this one survived to hit again another day.

Nice spinach harvest. Since I have been pre-sprouting my seeds, I no longer have to decide which one to pull! I have a difficult time with that.

That's a great pic of the window!

I tried presprouting seeds I got from Wilderness but they didn't germinate. I may offer some of the seedlings to my mom or daughter.

Great flowers! Spring! Hurray!

I have the same decision making problem, what I frequently end up doing is carefully separating the seedlings and potting up each so I have to give away. Cheerful spring flowers.

Marcia you seedling are coming along. I plant my seed in flats then transplant them into cell packs so no choosing. Anyone who dare germinate is in for a summer in the garden. I feel the transplant makes a big difference in the sturdiness of the seedling. Have always done it that way. When we owned the greenhouse it was hours of transplanting but that is the way it is done in most commercial greenhouses. It would help you tomatoes greatly as you could bury those that are getting leggy. I have my lights almost touching the plants at all times.

Thanks for the pointers, Wilderness. I think I may transplant some of these and like you said plant a little deeper to make them sturdier. I know my mom would probably take them for her garden.

I think I'll pass on taking any of your seedlings. They wouldn't transport well and I'm sure I'll have plenty (and some to give away) with the ones I just planted.

That is why I use soil blocks; I use the tiny 3/4" ones and put a single seed in each, I can fit two flats, containing a total of 400 blocks on my heating mat. As soon as most have germinated I pot on to 2" blocks and move them off the mat. As they out grow those blocks they go into 4-6 inch pots in the greenhouse. Continuous waves of little plants all spring.

Over wintered spinach is the way to go! All that cold weather just adds to the flavor! We usually just plant spinach in the fall and don't even bother with a spring planting!

I planted a whole bed this spring. We really like it cooked down.

I don't grow enough plants. My garden is small so I'll stick to this method and share if I can't snip.

Your spinach looks great! And I know it was yummy - I won't eat canned spinach anymore! That wing on the window was intriguing. Like an angel had come by to say hello.

Just planted some spinach. I can't wait for it to grow. I love the photo of the bird print on the window. Looks like an angel.

Great harvest! I know how you feel about the seedlings. I hate choosing! I am always concerned I will choose the wrong one and I hate just throwing out a perfectly good seedling. lol!!! The flowers are beautiful!

Poor bird. Ah, well. I found squirrel marks on mine the other day. Figure that one out!? Second story- I think he was trying to "FLY". LOL.
